Vaccination Guidelines

Dachshunds like all dogs, need to be seen by a registered Veterinarian for a yearly checkup. You should also check your dog for lumps and bumps during each grooming session. Below is a general guideline that the dogs at Laci Dachshunds follow.

American Veterinary Association Vaccine Guidelines

Through the years, I have become comfortable with my vaccine schedule. Although it may not be everyone's choice to vaccinate this way, it is the way *I* do it. The above link will let you know what the AAHA recommends and the link at the bottom of this page is another way of thinking that had a tremendous amount of thought and research put in to it. When the puppies are completely weaned, and that fluctuates from litter to litter, they will get their first vaccination.

The age of the puppies for their first vaccination will vary from 6 - 8weeks. DHP/Parvo (Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus Vaccine) are given 3 weeks apart for a total of 4 injections.  The last vaccination will be at no sooner than 16 weeks of age.   I use Vanguard Plus 5 for all 4 of their vaccinations.  The only vaccine company I will not use is Fort Dodge.  I do not vaccinate for Corona nor do I give the Leptospirosis vaccine. At 2 weeks of age the puppies are wormed and again at 6 weeks. However, I do that only as a precaution because the mothers are checked before being bred and in the last 15 years of breeding I have yet to have a positive stool sample in puppies!!!

As close to 6 months as is feasible, they will be given their first rabies vaccination followed in 12 months by a 3 year rabies vaccination. (Rabies is a legal requirement in Texas.)
