About Laci Dachshunds

Since the 1980s Laci Dachshunds have been bred for drive, determination, stamina, health, temperament, and conformation to better the breed. Laci Dachshunds began as a performance line working in Earthdog and Obedience, reinforcing the need for solid structure.  Laci Dachshunds compete in all venues available to Dachshunds.

When I started in Dachshunds, I was mainly interested in Earthdog and Obedience competition so therefore, the dogs had to have decent intellect and a strong work ethic. This evolved into an interest in Conformation competition, so the dogs needed to be both smart and well built plus have an innate need to work. That was over 30 years ago. Now my lines are required to do even more.

I require all of the dogs I own compete in Conformation.  I do not need the title to know the quality of the dog at the end of the leash, but I feel a need to confirm that knowledge with the competition of dog shows. Once they have attained their champion title they continue their education in the other venues open to Dachshunds - Agility, Obedience, Field, Tracking and Earthdog.

When I began showing the Dachshund breed, as I had shown Shepherds and Norwegian Elkhounds before that, the AKC did not offer Agility or Rally Obedience, and I was not cognizant of Tracking. However, after showing and judging Earthdog competition for years, Tracking presented itself as an obvious extension and the Dachshunds love learning new things.

My breeding philosophy is pretty simple. There must be solid conformation in both the sire and dam considered for breeding, as that will give the litter a better chance of being sound health wise. There are no guarantees with Dachshunds against IVDD (one of a few issues in the breed that could be cause for concern) or some other issues, however, this breeding philosophy gives the litters I whelp and raise a greater chance for long-lived, healthy lives.

I only breed, whelp, and raise a litter when there is a need or opening in my house. Therefore, litters are usually planned about every 2 years or so. That being said, I am always willing to refer interested buyers to breeders that might have a puppy or young adult available.
